ANSI/HFES 100-2007: Human Factors Engineering of Computer Workstations The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) recently published the first revision of ANSI/HFES100-1988, American National Standard for Human Factors Engineering of Visual Display Terminal Workstations on DVD. This edition of the standard incorporates several extensions based on technology advancements and increased human factors knowledge to the technical areas discussed in ANSI/HFES100-1988. 100 members of the ANSI/HFES Committee contributed to drafting this huge undertaking that contains hardware design specifications that are based on “accepted human factors engineering research and experience for computer workstations, their associated furniture, and the end user's workplace environment”. ANSI/HFES 100-2007 standard “applies to computer workstations used regularly in office workplaces by users with normal perceptual and cognitive capabilities for text-, data-, and simple graphics-processing tasks”.
The 108 pages of this standards document summarizes the findings of all the research that should be considered in hardware design specifications for computer workstations. Illustrated just when is needed, clear, and unambiguous language makes the standards extensively useful for all people involved in design and evaluation of computerized workstations. Should you be an academic, ergonomist, occupational physician, occupational nurse, or workstation evaluator you must have this resource. The digital format of the document makes it easily searchable, viewable by section and storable on your computer, which facilitate to its access whenever you write an evaluation report or when referencing to the document. For larger organization ask HFES about a site license in case you want to put it on an intranet for multiple users. If you have not already purchase the document and can order it online at http://www.hfes.org/Publications/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=69 A.M.
